Historical Facts

Gardendale’s history includes many interesting facts. Here are a few examples.

1824 – 1834 The first homesteaders to settle in the area included John Belcher, Otis Dyer and Zachariah Stagg.

1870s Coal mines opened nearby, causing the area’s population to double. The settlement, called “Jugtown,” received its name during this decade because of a factory located there that made jugs and churns. James Kimmons, owner of Jugtown’s general store, deeded land for the community’s first church.

1892 John T. Milner, an industrialist who developed the New Castle coal mines, donated lumber for Milner School. This grammar school, located on Mount Olive Road, was near Gardendale’s present elementary school.

1906 Due to the efforts of Hettie Thomason Cargo, a local schoolteacher who disliked the settlement’s original name, Jugville was renamed “Gardendale.”

1935 Under President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s “New Deal,” efforts began in Jefferson County to rebuild and strengthen the county’s economy. Local workers hired by the Works Progress Administration, or “WPA,” built housing units, paved streets, constructed bridges and culverts, and upgraded sewer systems. WPA construction projects in Jefferson County continued for eight years and employed more than 9,000 people.

One goal of the WPA was to establish Gardendale as a resettlement community. The Gardendale resettlement project included an experimental endeavor to build seven homes of rammed earth. These seven homes are the only rammed earth structures ever built by the United States government that remain standing and functional today.

1955 Gardendale became an incorporated city.

1987 The Gardendale Chamber of Commerce held its first meeting.
