History

In the early 1800s, Native Americans inhabited the wilderness area that was to become Central Point. The Reed Family, émigrés from North Carolina, settled on prime land that included 17 springs. The settlement’s growth exploded when a permanent water source was discovered in 1947. In 1967, Center Point had a population of 64,000 and was the biggest unincorporated community in the United States.

Center Point’s boundaries shrank when the city incorporated in 2002, and the population dropped from 22,874 in 2000 to 16,864 in 2013. Median age is 34.2 years. The median household income is $41,284. Transportation and healthcare are the top two industries, followed by retail sales. The average commute is 27 minutes.

Geography and Climate

Center Point is part of Jefferson County. The city lies 12 miles north of Birmingham and covers eight square miles; it is part of the Birmingham-Hoover metropolitan area. It is bordered by Trussville on the east, Clay and Pinson on the north, and Fultondale and Gardendale on the west. Interstate 59 is the major highway connector to Birmingham. The Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority provides bus service to Center Point.

Center Point averages 214 days of sunshine and a temperature of 62 degrees. Summer temperatures tend to be in the 70’s, maxing out at around 91 in July. Winter temperatures tend to be in the 40’s, with January lows capable of dropping to 30.

A farmers market featuring fresh produce grown by local farmers, an annual golf tournament and Christmas parade, movies in the park, Winter Fest and the Festival of Springs are a few of the events the city hosts. The Reed-Harvey Park features theatrical and cultural events in addition to outdoor recreation. The 17-acre park includes an amphitheater, senior center, walking trails, playgrounds and picnic areas. The Center Point Ball Park offers youth sports and intramural leagues, and Civitan Park features woods and open spaces.
