Why You Shouldn’t Skimp on Air Filters

How important is changing your air filter? It may seem like a simple and inconsequential part of your Trusville, Alabama, HVAC system, but it’s extremely important. The air filter is responsible for your indoor air quality (IAQ) and for keeping the interior of your machine clean.

Air Filters Protect the Air You Breathe

The most obvious reason for changing your air filter regularly benefits your health because that air filter is responsible for cleaning the air that moves through your HVAC system. Dust, pet dander, mold spores, and other debris gets caught in the air filter. If the filter is dirty, it can no longer trap these things, and they stay in your home’s air and end up in your lungs. If the filter is cheap, most of that stuff goes right through it. Gross, right?

A Clogged Air Filter Can Freeze the Coils

This doesn’t happen to everyone, but it can happen. If the air filter is too dirty, then air has a hard time entering the air handler. The right air flow is essential to the heat exchange process that happens in your HVAC system’s coils. If that air flow gets interrupted, the coils could freeze. That means no AC until we turn off the unit and the coils defrost.

Debris Inside the System Is Bad for Efficiency

Your HVAC system is a machine: it contains a lot of moving electrical parts, connections, and wiring. Machines operate better when they’re clean. If the inside of your HVAC system gets dirty, it affects how well those parts all work together. When the machine’s careful balance gets thrown off, it starts to wear out faster because parts have to put up with more strain than normal. If changing the air filter feels like too simple a way to prevent this, trust us when we say the air filter is an essential part of that machine.
