Many commercial cleaning products contain phthalates, sodium lauryl sulfate, or volatile organic compounds (VOCs). VOCs evaporate at room temperature, so they’re a common ingredient in fragrances. They include chemicals like formaldehyde, acetone, xylene, and gasoline. These substances may be harmful to kids and adults and could reduce the indoor air quality in your Pelham, Alabama, home. They may also lead to growth problems, hormonal imbalances, allergies, asthma, and other health problems. Fortunately, you can protect your children by making your own kid-friendly cleaning products with substances like baking soda, vinegar, and tea tree oil.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is very inexpensive, and it works as a natural deodorizer. It’s great for scrubbing the faucets and sinks. You can clean your toilet bowl by sprinkling baking soda around the inside and then scrubbing it with a toilet brush. For lots of dirt that’s difficult to clean, make a paste with baking soda and water. Then apply it to the spot you need to clean and let it sit for about 15 minutes.

Vinegar

Vinegar is another healthy economical cleaner that’s a favorite of many people. To remove tough mold or mildew in your bathroom, mix salt and vinegar. Then use it to scrub your bathtub and the tiles in your shower. You may also use plain vinegar to clean tile or hardwood floors. Mix water and vinegar in a spray bottle to clean countertops, tables, and other surfaces.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is from the leaves of the Australian paperbark tree, and it’s known for its antibacterial properties. Before you do your laundry, add a few drops to your washing machine to get rid of bad smells. To prevent mold, add about 10 drops of tea tree oil to a spray bottle with water. Spray your bathroom walls and other places in your home that are prone to mold.
