4 Reasons Your Gardendale, AL Heat Pump Keeps Freezing

Observing some ice on your Gardendale, AL, heat pump is common. However, if your heat pump’s coils fully freeze or the entire unit becomes enclosed in ice, your system will not function properly, and it could damage the components. Understanding why your heating pump freezes is the first step in resolving and avoiding the issue.

1. Blocked Filters

Air filters capture dust and other air pollutants as the air moves through the system. Blocked filters cause a heat pump to work harder to circulate air. When your heat pump has to work harder, it may cause the coils to freeze, or the system to break down, necessitating service and fixes that are more expensive.

2. Low Refrigerant

If your system is low on refrigerant, you’ve got a problem. Coils containing refrigerant can show wear through pinpoint holes allowing refrigerant leaks.

3. Blower Motor Failure

If the blower motor isn’t working properly, it can cause your system to freeze. Check to see if the venting fan is working correctly.

It could start and stop sporadically, operate at a decreased spinning cycle, or stop completely. If you’re in this situation, have it replaced by an expert.

4. Dirty Evaporator Coils

Refrigerant flows via the evaporator coil. It transfers heat into your house during cool weather and draws heat out during hot temperatures.

When it gets dirty, it loses its capacity to transmit heat. This can impair circulation and cause a chill. If you detect frost on your heat pump coils, turn it off, and contact your Gardendale, AL HVAC expert.

Don’t delay because frozen heat pump refrigerant lines could lead to severe problems. Contact One Source Heating, Cooling & Electrical right away for reliable heat pump services.
