History

In 1821, Warren, Joel and Sam Jr Truss emigrated from North Carolina and were the first Europeans to settle in the area. An agrarian community until the Alabama-Chattanooga Railroad arrived shortly after the Civil War, the settlement transitioned to industrial with the building of a blast furnace in 1886. The Trussville Furnace produced foundry pig iron from 1889-1919. When the furnace was dismantled in 1933, the land became the site of Cahaba Homestead Village. Originally called “Slagheap Village” because of the slag piles left over from the furnace, Cahaba Village joined Old Trussville when Trussville was incorporated as a town in 1947. The town became a city in 1957 and adopted the City of Trussville as its official name.
