History of Fultondale

Fultondale was founded around the turn of the century as a result of local mining activities that began in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The town chose the name Fultondale upon its incorporation as part of Jefferson County, Alabama, in 1947, and combined three communities into one larger city:

  • Fulton Springs
  • Glendale
  • Lewisburg

According to a 2011 article published in the North Jefferson News, Fultondale instituted a mayor-city council form of government at the time of its incorporation, an arrangement that continues to the present day.

Geographical Location

Fultondale’s location at the south end of the Appalachian Mountains has had a significant impact on both the climate and the economic opportunities available to residents of the area. While coal mining was the source of income for most early settlers, the town’s proximity to farming communities surrounding Birmingham and the railroads serving the Appalachian mining industry helped it to grow and prosper throughout the years.

Economic Growth

During its early years, Fultondale’s economy depended almost entirely on the coal mining industry. As these natural resources were expended, the city turned to other arenas of commerce and industry to sustain itself. In recent years, however, Fultondale has expanded in size and has become a popular neighborhood for families in the Birmingham metropolitan area.
The largest single employment sector in Fultondale is the educational field, which is followed by manufacturing, professional and construction activities.

Parks and Recreation

As a family-oriented community, Fultondale is justifiably proud of its local parks. The Fultondale parks system includes Holt Park and Black Creek Park, both of which include athletic fields used by local youth teams. Black Creek Park features a number of softball fields as well as a bandstand and a picnic pavilion that can seat 100 people. The jogging and hiking trails adjoin a stream and provide a real treat for nature lovers.

Shopping

Opened to the public in 2007, the Colonial Promenade Fultondale offers a wide range of shopping and dining options for residents and visitors to the area. Anchored by JCPenney and Target, the 355,000-square-foot shopping center also includes fast food and sit-down restaurants, Rue 21, Maurice’s, GNC and Kay Jewelers. This elite commercial venue is located at the corner of Walkers Chapel Road and Interstate 65.

Climate and Geography

According to the U.S. National Weather Service, Fultondale enjoys mild winters and warm summers. The Gulf of Mexico is just 300 miles away and exerts a tempering effect on extremes of temperature at both ends of the spectrum. Still, temperatures in the low 90-degree range Fahrenheit are relatively common during summers in this area.
