Industry and History

This small industrial town has always been overshadowed by Birmingham, but its story and influence on the state is equally notable. Bessemer is located in a unique geologic area that has limestone, coal, iron deposits and all of the minerals that are essential for steel production. In the late 19th century, wealthy industrialists founded massive smelting plants and steel factories that built railroads and cities. The steel industry powered the town’s growth and helped nearby Birmingham earn the nickname “Pittsburgh of the South.” For many years, Pullman Standard and other industrial firms manufactured railroad cars and other products in Bessemer. These steel goods were transported on an extensive network of rail lines that pass through the city.

Relics from this early industrial boom are preserved in the Downtown Bessemer National Historic District, which includes a large collection of houses and shops that were built in the late 19th century and early 20th century. This historic district is also home to The Bright Star, which is the oldest continuously operated restaurant in the state.

Local Attractions and Achievements

Modern-day Bessemer is known for much more than its rich history. The town’s schools and sports programs have produced two Heisman Trophy winners, nearly a dozen National Football League players, several Major League Baseball players and a remarkable number of artists, writers and musicians.

Bessemer is one of four places in the United States where the endangered watercress darter lives in the wild. This small, colorful fish is thriving in the Watercress Darter National Wildlife Refuge where streams and ponds provide a sheltered environment that has allowed the darter to be reintroduced to other areas.

Another popular attraction is the Alabama Splash Adventure water park, which is open from May through the beginning of September. The park’s water slides and summer concerts attract nearly 400,000 visitors annually. In an area where temperatures are near or above 90 degrees for one-third of the year, it’s one of the best places for residents to cool down and relax.
